Story made up offensively for his pair of errors in the field.
The story for the Red Sox Friday night was, well, Trevor Story.
Boston’s shortstop put together an excellent performance at the plate against the White Sox at Fenway Park, clobbering a pair of three-run home runs in his team’s 10-3 victory.
Story’s first long ball came right out of the gate in the bottom of the first inning, a 427-foot blast to center field off former Red Sox Martin Perez to give Boston a 3-0 lead.
The 32-year-old wasn’t finished after that. In the seventh, Story launched another three-run homer, this one a 365-footer into the back of the Green Monster. That one gave the Red Sox a 9-2 advantage.
Conversely, Story didn’t have his best night in the field. He committed a fielding error in the first inning and a throwing error in the sixth, Boston’s only miscues of the night.
Story certainly made up for those mistakes by finishing the game 3-for-4 with 6 RBI.
“Yeah, it’s big, man,” Story said of his explosive offensive night. “Any time you come up with runners on base, you wanna come through for the boys. Really, just trying to keep it simple. Get a pitch that I can handle. Took care of the mistakes tonight, so I like that.”
It’s evident that all Story needs to do is stay healthy to be productive at this point in his career. After suffering a devastating shoulder injury on April 5 last season, it has to feel good to be in the lineup midway through this April and making a difference in the Red Sox’ lineup.
Story is batting .364 in April with an .876 OPS, five HR, and 14 RBI on the season. He’s stolen six bases through 21 games, too, matching his 2024 total (26 games).
Manager Alex Cora is pleased with Story’s efforts thus far. He said if the player stays healthy, he’s capable of achieving the 30 home run and 30 stolen bases threshold.
“This guy’s been hurt. And when he’s healthy, it’s 30/30,” Cora said postgame. “This guy’s really good. So we haven’t seen the healthy version of Trevor Story. My job is to keep him on the field, and I’ll do my best. Obviously last year, that was a freak accident. But when he plays, he produces. So far, it’s been fun to watch.”
Cora also said it isn’t fair to say Story’s bat is a “bonus” on top of his defensive prowess when healthy.
It’s a good way for Story and his team to kick off this series versus Chicago. Friday’s win evened the season series between the clubs at 2-2 after Boston dropped two out of three to the White Sox last week.
The Red Sox’ Garrett Crochet will face off against Shane Smith in the second game of the four-game set on Saturday at 4:10 P.M. Eastern Time.
