After falling behind by six runs in the first inning, William & Mary (17-24, 10-6) rallied past Stony Brook 8-6 in a Coastal Athletic Association series opener Friday on New York’s Long Island. It was W&M’s largest comeback victory of the season.
Tom Bourque, Connor Kolarov, Tyler Kelly and winner Daniel Lingle (2-0) combined to pitch 8 1/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Seawolves (21-18, 8-8).
Home runs by Christian Rush and Lucas Carmichael helped W&M get back in the game. In the eighth, Ben Parker hit a two-run double to tie the score at 6, and Carmichael hit a go-ahead two-run double.
Duke 6, Virginia Tech 3, 11 innings: AJ Gracia whacked a three-run homer in the bottom of the 11th to send the Blue Devils (29-14, 13-9 ACC) past the Hokies (26-16, 10-12) in a series opener in Durham.
Reid Easterly (7-1) pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the victory. Cameron LeJeune (2-2) pitched four innings but took the loss.
David Lewis was 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in the seventh for Tech.
Virginia 12, No. 24 Georgia Tech 9: The Cavaliers (23-15, 10-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) began a series in Atlanta by beating the Yellow Jackets (29-13, 14-8) behind a seven-run fourth inning that featured three home runs. UVA led 9-3 after that outburst.
James Nunnallee went 4 for 4 with a fourth-inning homer and three RBIs. Aidan Teel and Henry Godbout also homered in the fourth and drove in three runs for UVA, and Western Branch High graduate Harrison Didawick had two hits and an RBI.
Carson Kerce, Kyle Lodise and Caleb Daniel all hit home runs for Georgia Tech.
Central Connecticut State 13-4, Norfolk State 3-3: The first-place Blue Devils (24-8, 19-1 Northeast Conference) swept a doubleheader against the Spartans (1-31, 1-19) in seven innings in New Britain.
In Game 1, winner Drew Munn (6-0) pitched a seven-inning complete game, scattering 10 hits.
Justin Journette, who was 3 for 4, homered for NSU. Cam Mazell added an RBI hit.
Ethan Blakeney (0-5) took the loss, giving up eight hits and six earned runs in two innings.
Game 2 was far closer, but provided more frustration for the Spartans.
In the third inning, NSU went ahead 2-0. Jamal Ritter singled home Jalan Jones, then scored on a hit to right field by Robert Beatty, who was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.
CCSU got a run in the third and went ahead 3-2 in the fourth on Gianno Merlonghi’s two-run homer. An error added a run in the fourth.
Journette homered to center in the fifth to make it 4-3, but the Spartans never scored again. Wyatt Cameron pitched 2 2/3 hitless innings to save the triumph for starter Vincent Borghese (8-1).
NSU starter Parker Hampton pitched five innings but took the loss. NSU relievers Donovan Whitfield, Myles Crocker and Yasseel Samboy combined for three scoreless innings.
