A deal for a new stadium at the RFK site in Washington, D.C. has been reached, according to 7News sources.
Just last week, negotiations were ongoing between the Washington Commanders ownership group and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on a new NFL stadium where the old RFK Stadium sits, and, at the time, no deal had been struck yet. On Sunday, however, sources told 7News that a deal has been achieved.
Axios reported that an announcement is planned for 11 a.m. Monday.
The deal would still need support from the city council to move forward.
DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson’s office provided the following statement:
“The cost to the District will be at least $856M, and I continue to be concerned with investing any public money into a stadium while we have constrained budgets and revenues, and unmet needs,” Mendelson said in a statement through his spokesperson.
The team has been looking for a new stadium for several years, and that search moved to a new level when Josh Harris’ group bought the Commanders from previous owner Dan Snyder in 2023. Places in Washington, Virginia and Maryland have all been under consideration.
The Commanders’ lease at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, runs through 2027.
Last week, just a day before the city’s latest budget announcement, Bowser posted a video where she can be seen talking about the importance of the city’s sports teams to the local economy, with images including the rusted husk of the old RFK Stadium.
“Washington sports teams should play in Washington. The sports economy sometimes gets minimized to fun and games, but it’s dollars and cents,” Bowser said in the video. “We have to shift our economy. We have to be committed to tough decisions that change the business environment here.”
On Sunday Bowser posted to X about the development of Nationals Park.
“In 2006, DC made a bold investment of $611M to build a new stadium on a vacant lot. Today, that neighborhood has over 85 restaurants, 6,500 residences, & 5 hotels,” Bowser wrote.
“That’s what we mean when we talk about a sports economy.”
