Mountain Brook rolls over Buckhorn to advance in 6A baseball playoffs

Second-ranked Mountain Brook bounced Buckhorn out of the AHSAA Class 6A state playoffs with a 6-inning walk-off run-rule 11-1 win at home on Monday. The Spartans improved to 28-9 on the season and will meet Gardendale in Round 3.

Mountain Brook fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second when the No. 5 Bucks (26-14) pushed across a 2-out run when Owen Todd singled, took third on a Spartans error and scored on a singled to left by Myles Anglin.

The Spartans answered in the bottom of the second, also with 2 outs, when Paul Barnett ripped a 2-run home run, bringing in Luke Houser, who had singled. Mountain Brook’s Caleb Barnett walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Hunter Davis.

Barnett also had a double in the win to finish 2-for-3 at the plate in the win. No. 9 hitter Houser went 1-for-1 with a triple and 3 runs scored and Becker Mayor, who batted eighth, was 2-for-4 with a triple and a double, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Davis was 2-for-4 for Mountain Brook.

Jude Davidson picked up the win, allowing an unearned run on 2 hits with 8 strikeouts in 6 innings.

Starter Peyton Joiner took the loss for Buckhorn, allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks in 3 innings.

Buckhorn won the first game of the series 4-1 on Saturday before the Spartans took the second game 9-4.
