The Seattle skyline flared with new colors on Friday as the Indian Tricolor was hoisted atop the Space Needle for the first time, marking India’s 79th Independence Day.
The moment, celebrated by city leaders and the vibrant Indian American community, underscored Seattle’s role as a center for diversity and international friendship. Seattle’s Consul General of India Prakash Gupta and Mayor Bruce Harrell attended, among other officials.
“It’s a profound symbol of pride for the Indian community in Seattle,” Gupta said. “It reflects the achievements of New India — its youth, tech professionals, and growing global influence, especially in the Pacific Northwest.”
After the flag raising, hundreds gathered for a community reception at Kerry Park, overlooking Seattle and the freshly adorned Space Needle.
The festivities featured the national anthems of both India and the U.S., a vibrant dance performance showcasing India’s artistic diversity and a poetic recital by artist Piyush Mishra.
On Saturday, downtown’s Westlake Park burst with color as community members in traditional attire from different parts of India flocked to the park with flags, balloons and lively folk dances.
Hundreds watched, capturing the moment on their phones. Many paradegoers shared that representing their states and cultures in the heart of Seattle fostered a sense of belonging, pride, and connection to both India and their new home.
