“The Cat Man of Aleppo”—from book to play
Adapted for the stage by acclaimed author Karim Shamsi-Basha from the Caldecott Honor–winning book he co-wrote with Irene Latham, The Cat Man of Aleppo” play shares the true and uplifting story of one man’s courage and compassion in the midst of unimaginable hardship.
Set in war-torn Syria, ambulance driver Mohammad Alaa Aljaleel makes a life-changing decision: to remain behind not only to help those in need, but to also care for hundreds of cats left behind in the rubble of Aleppo.
What begins as a simple act of kindness grows into a powerful symbol of hope and humanity, even in the darkest days.
Directed by Meryem Tunagur-Williams, the staged reading at BCT offers audiences a moving glimpse into this extraordinary story.
