An investigation is underway after a Weber County Jail inmate died Friday night following “a medical emergency,” according to the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.

In a news release, the office said the individual experienced the medical emergency at about 8:45 p.m. The inmate was attended to by deputies and medical staff before emergency responders took the individual to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead, authorities said.

The inmate had been in the jail for only a short time, according to the news release, and was housed in the medical area.

The sheriff’s office did not name the individual who died, specify whether they were a man or woman, or provide any further details, saying the death is under investigation by the Weber County Attorney’s Office.

“We offer our condolences to the family of the deceased,” the sheriff’s office said. “We ask for patience as this case is investigated.”
