HIGH SCHOOL BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Numerous area players earned VHSL Class 5 all-state recognition Friday.
The first team included Kempsville’s Wyatt Strawbridge and libero Thien Tran, Kellam’s Bennett Pyka and Nathan Pyka, Granby’s Alijah Lamp, Hickory’s Carson Tortone, Indian River’s Jaden Norman and First Colonial’s Bo Sawyer. All are seniors.
The second team included Granby’s Andrew Parker, Maury’s Keegan Anuar, Kempsville’s Rylan Patterson, Hickory’s Nolan Kennedy, First Colonial’s Zia Peterson and Warwick’s Josiah Norton and Braeden Toland. Toland is a junior, and the others are seniors.
State champion Glen Allen swept the top awards, with Kevin Hoy as Coach of the Year and senior Jacob Onusconich as the Player of the Year.

JMU players make All-G5 first team
James Madison offensive lineman Pat McMurtrie, all-purpose player Wayne Knight and linebacker Trent Hendrick made the Hero Sports Group of Five All-America first team.
Liberty running back Evan Dickens and former Virginia quarterback Anthony Colandrea of UNLV were on the second team.
JMU quarterback Alonza Barnett III, who won the Dudley Award on Thursday night, and Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph were on the third team.

NC State, Washington advance to NCAA final
No. 15 seed North Carolina State and unseeded Washington advanced to the NCAA College Cup championship match with semifinal victories Friday in Cary, North Carolina. They’ll square off for the trophy Monday night.
The Huskies (15-6-2) began the evening by defeating No. 16 seed Furman 3-1. NC State then ousted Saint Louis 2-1.
Zach Ramsey opened the scoring for Washington in the 32nd minute. Charlie Kosakoff made it 2-0 eight minutes later. In the 86th, Asher Hestad scored off a Kosakoff pass. The Paladins then averted a shutout with a late goal.
Donavan Phillip’s header in the 69th minute put NC State on top after the Wolfpack had controlled much of the play. Riley Moloney then passed to Taig Healy for a 2-0 Wolfpack lead in the 72nd minute.
The Billikens’ Quinten Blair netted a penalty kick with just less than 10 minutes remaining, but NC State held on.
UVA players earn All-America honors
Virginia freshman forward Nick Simmonds, of Midlothian, was named a first-team All-American and Cavaliers senior midfielder Umberto Pelà made the second team, as selected by the United Soccer Coaches. VCU senior defender Moussa Ndiaye was on the second team.

Poquoson grad takes All-ECAC award
James Madison senior Skyler Brown, a Poquoson High graduate, made the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I second team. She scored nine goals and earned first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors.
