A single-vehicle crash in Brunswick on Friday evening left the driver dead after his car went over the barrier as he merged onto Route 1.
At 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 2, the Brunswick Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash on Route 1 near the Route 196 ramp, according to a release from Brunswick Chief of Police Scott J. Stewart.
The investigation determined that Shannon MacGregor, 47 and of Woolwich, had been driving his Dodge Journey up the Route 196 onramp towards Route 1 northbound. As the car went over the bridge, it left the lane and drove up an icy embankment and over a barrier, falling to the ground below.
MacGregor was pronounced dead at the scene.
Brunswick Police discovered a dog in the vehicle and took it to emergency veterinary services. It is expected to make a full recovery.
The Route 196 onramp was temporarily closed and traffic on northbound Route 1 reduced to one lane for several hours.
The Topsham Police, Freeport Police, Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, Brunswick Fire Department and Maine Department of Transportation provided additional assistance at the scene.
The Brunswick Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is conducting an ongoing investigation of the accident.
