Newton won two individual titles and had two second-place finishes to earn the team title at the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex girls wrestling tournament at High Point.
Newton totaled 149 points, while High Point followed closely in second place with 145 points, Vernon took third with 122, Hunterdon Central was fourth with 118.5 points and Jefferson rounded out the top five with 99.
Newton’s performance was highlighted by two champions: Eva Barry, who earned her title with a pin of Phillipsburg’s Gabriella Santos at 1:36 in the 145-pound bracket, and Stella Ramos, who claimed victory via a pin of North Hunterdon’s Stella Frigiola at 5:32 at 152.
The team also had strong showings from runners-up Hannah Harrison, who lost by injure default to Hunterdon Central’s Emma Peake at 126; Brianna Murphy, who was pinned by Delaware Valley’s Emmy Rea Hotz at 185, and Abbie Paglia, who dropped a major decision to Warren Hills’ Addison Speth at 235.
High Point junior Ella Poalillo, a two-time state champion and last season’s NJ.com Wrestler of the Year, recorded a 10-second pin to to take the title at 165.
Other individual champions were:
- Natalie Andrade of Hunterdon Central, who won by decision at 100
- High Point’s Elle Changaris, who took home a major decision at 114
- Jenna Cammarata from Wallkill Valley earned a pin in the 107 final
- Cora Almendinger of Lenape Valley, won won by pin at 120
- Paige Weiss of Jefferson, who won by pin at 132
- Melodie Guzik-Upchurch, a winner via pin at 138
