As January comes to a close, Birmingham is gearing up for Black History Month. In a city steeped in formative civil rights history, the Magic City is a great place to celebrate Black history, learn more about the civil rights movement and honor those who have forged the path for freedom and acceptance.
Here are some events to add to your calendar for February, ranging from unique educational opportunities to exciting markets.

Wednesdays in February: Artists + events at High Dive

- What: Each Wednesday throughout the month, head to High Dive to celebrate Black History Month with a lineup of artists and events full of storytelling and music.

Feb. 7: Fourth Annual Black Male Summit
- What: A transformative event to bring together voices from across the country to empower and uplift the community. This year, the event will welcome a lineup of speakers who will share their expertise, insights and wisdom to help elevate both your personal life and professional career.

Feb. 7: Black Heritage Fair at the Birmingham Public Library

- What: A book sale from the Birmingham Historical Society and Birmingham African American Geneaology Group.

- What: Join the Birmingham Public Library System for an outdoor literacy and cultural experience celebrating Black history, agriculture and community. The Titusville Library is collaborating with the Tuskegee Block and Bridle Club for an exciting Black History Month program featuring Black veterinarians, live cows, storytelling, line dancing and intergenerational learning.

Feb. 18: A.G. Gaston Conference
- What: The A.G. Gaston Conference is the place to connect business owners, community leaders, and all who believe in African American empowerment. Join for a day filled with information to empower and inspire you to change your future.

Feb. 21-22: 2nd Annual Black History Month Bazaar
- What: Browse a host of Black-owned businesses and organizations, live music, food, activities, giveaways and family events.

Feb. 22: Tribute to James Brown, the Godfather of Soul

- What: Head to this “Musical Funkumentary” from Alabama-based R&B and funk performer Charlz with a Z to learn about the legendary singer, songwriter, dancer, musician and record producer and enjoy some great music.

Feb. 23: Wine Tasting at LeNell’s Beverage Boutique

- What: Meet South Africa’s first Black female winemaker, Ntsiki Biyela, during her first visit to Alabama. Enjoy some free samples of her wines, and she’ll be available to sign bottles, as well.

Feb. 25: Sidewalk Cinema Book + Film Club

- What: Sidewalk’s Book + Film Club unites movie and book lovers for a monthly film screening. February’s book will be “Black Rodeo: A History of the African American Western by Mia Mask,” and the film will be the 1972 movie “Buck and the Preacher.” Friday, Feb. 6 is the registration deadline for books to be mailed.
