GORHAM — There weren’t any first-place plaques to be handed out the end of Friday’s late night Western Maine Conference indoor track championship meet, so Greely athletic director David Shapiro improvised.
The York boys scored 128 points, enough to beat defending champs Greely (119) and earn a team photo behind a “First Place”-branded red foam pad. The Wildcats tried to take the trophy home with them, but the Yarmouth and Freeport girls teams needed a shared photo with it first, since they each scored 141 points.
“I can’t remember the last time this happened,” Shapiro said before announcing the split title.
Freeport (76), Fryeburg Academy (73) and Poland (68) rounded out the boys team top five, while Greely (88), York (83) and Gray-New Gloucester (45.5) did the same on the girls side.
Greely, the defending WMC girls champs, were led by three senior or open division wins from Victoria Zandan. The junior, named the WMC senior girls field athlete season MVP, was the only person to win more than two individual events Friday, regardless of division.
Zandan won the long jump (17 feet, 5 3/4 inches), the triple jump (35-3) and the 55-meter hurdles (8.67 seconds). She also placed second and set a PR in the 55-meter dash.
“I do so many events at the meets prior to this,” she said, “it basically prepares me for meets that are chaotic, like this.”
Other multi-event winners include:
Freeport’s Alex Gilbert (4:29.49, mile; 10:01.50, 2-mile) and York’s Zoe Carroll (5:19.79, mile; 11:29.74, 2-mile) who swept the distance races, both doing so with a considerable margin. Carroll also placed second in the 800.
Jacqueline Diallo of Traip won the 55 (7.47) and 200 meter (26.22) dashes in the junior girls division. Aaron Adams of Wells won 200 (23.62) and was second in the 55 (6.80) in the junior boys division, while also earning second place in the senior long jump.
Ty Boone won both the boys high jump (6-2) and long jump (20-0.75) for Fryeburg Academy.
The York boys had senior or open individual wins in the shot put (William Fagan, 49-5) and the 55 dash (Christopher Dimino, 6.67). Freeport earned first-place finishes in the 400 (Jack Brogan, 53.11), 800 (Ian Guzman, 2:00.99), 55 hurdles (Brady Webber, 8.36) and triple jump (Tyler Burns, 39-5.25). Greely and Fryeburg Academy each had one other individual event win with the pole vault (Nathan Kim, 11-6) and 200 (Jacob Eveleth Jr., 23.44), respectively.
The Greely boys won both relay events, while Yarmouth (800) and Freeport (1,600) split the girls relays.
Yarmouth also earned a win from Miah Jacobs (55, 7.31). The Falcons received first-place finishes from Lucy Huggett (800, 2:22.71), Emma Graham (400, 1:01.43) and Claire Ramus (high jump, 4-10). Greely won the pole vault with 10-6 from Piper Higgins. Cape Elizabeth’s Sloan Gardner won the shot put with a best throw of 40-10.25. Fryeburg’s Avery Bariteau won the 200 in 26 seconds flat.
