Residents of a three-unit apartment building in Westbrook were displaced by an intense fire that several crews extinguished Thursday evening.
Westbrook fire Chief Stephen Sloan said the fire was reported at the building on North Street around 5:20 p.m. Two people were treated for injuries at the site of the fire, but no one was seriously hurt or taken to the hospital, he said.
Sloan said the fire appears to be accidental but that the Office of State Fire Marshal will investigate the cause.
The building will be uninhabitable until it is rebuilt, Sloan said.
Firefighters had to be evacuated from the building shortly after they arrived because of the volume of smoke and fire on all floors. They had to take “a defensive position” and extinguish the fire from outside, Sloan said in a statement Thursday night.
Crews from Portland, Scarborough, Windham, Gorham, South Portland and Falmouth helped the Westbrook department extinguish the second-alarm fire.
Sections of North and Brown streets were temporarily closed as firefighters worked at the scene, which was cleared at about 9 p.m.
