Justin Journette tied Norfolk State’s career record for home runs with his 35th, but Long Island won 8-5 Saturday to complete a three-game sweep of the host Spartans (1-29, 1-17 Northeast Conference).
The visiting Sharks (21-17, 15-3) went ahead 8-2 with a six-run sixth inning. Journette, a junior from Hermitage High in Richmond, belted a three-run blast to center field in the ninth, equaling the mark Mel Wearing set in 1989. Journette also hit a tying RBI single in the fifth.

Virginia Tech 10, No. 12 North Carolina 6: Home runs by Henry Cooke, Sam Tackett, David McCann and Ben Watson during the opening two innings in Blacksburg led to the Hokies’ seventh victory of the season over a top-25 team (per D1Baseball). It came before 2,581, the largest crowd at English Field in Blacksburg since April 15, 2023.
Tech (25-14, 10-10 ACC) pounded UNC starter Aidan Haugh for five hits, including three home runs, through its opening six at-bats.

Boaz’s ensuing pitch to Anderson French went above the helmet of the 6-foot-5 catcher and hit French’s bat, prompting a routine throw from the catcher to first base for an out. As the sequence and the inning ended, actions by both teams led to a quarrel between both sides, leading to the ejections of French and both head coaches.
