ODU, Richmond renew men’s basketball series with home-and-home – The Virginian-Pilot

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

The Old Dominion men’s basketball program and the University of Richmond announced Wednesday that they will begin a home-and-home series in the upcoming season.

The Monarchs will travel to Richmond on Dec. 6 for the 2024-25 season and will host the Spiders for the 2025-26 season at Chartway Arena.

The programs haven’t met since Dec. 19, 2021, in Richmond, where the Spiders prevailed 67-61. The schools have played each other 61 times, dating back to 1978. ODU leads the series 33-28.

MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Game 2 of Tides’ series postponed

The Norfolk Tides’ game against the Memphis Redbirds on Wednesday was postponed due to unplayable field conditions.

The contest will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader Friday, starting at 5:35 p.m. Both will be seven-inning games.

Fans can exchange their tickets for Wednesday’s game at the Harbor Park box office for any remaining 2025 regular-season home game, except for July 3.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Richardson, Clark to return to NSU

Guards Anjanae Richardson and Da’Brya Clark will return to Norfolk State next season.

Richardson was the MEAC Sixth Player of the Year and made the All-MEAC third team after averaging 9.7 points, 2.1 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game this past season.

Clark also was on the All-MEAC third team and averaged 9.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS

Three from ODU earn SBC awards

Old Dominion picked up three top honors from the Sun Belt Conference.

Sofia Johnson has been named the league’s Player of the Year, while Kira Matushkina is the Player to Watch and Dominic Manilla is Coach of the Year.

Johnson, a senior from London, repeated as Player of the Year. She is 25-6 this year, went 14-2 at the No. 1 singles spot this spring and is ranked No. 24 in the country. She joined Matushkina and teammate Lidiia Rasskouskaia on the all-conference singles first team.

Matushkina is 20-7 this year and 12-3 in the spring, having played all but one match at the No. 2 singles spot.

Rasskouskaia is 17-5 this year and 12-2 in the spring, playing primarily at the No. 3 singles spot.
Manilla picked up his third straight Coach of the Year honor.

The ODU doubles teams of Johnson and Victoria Matasova as well as Matushkina and Marina Markina made the all-conference first team. Johnson and Matasova were 7-2 at the No. 1 spot, while Matushkina and Markina were 11-3 at the No. 3 spot.

The Monarchs will seek their third straight Sun Belt title beginning Friday.

COLLEGE GOLF

UVA picked as host of NCAA regional

Virginia will host a regional in the NCAA women’s golf championships. The event will be held May 5-7 at the Birdwood Golf Course in Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers are the No. 2 seed. No. 11 seed Richmond and No. 12 Radford are also in the 12-team regional.

Virginia Tech is the No. 7 seed in Arizona State’s regional.

  • Virginia Wesleyan’s women finished fourth at the ODAC Championship on Wednesday. Juliette Coffey shot a final-round 77 to lead the Marlins.
  • Old Dominion’s men finished tied for 12th in stroke play at the Sun Belt Men’s Golf Championship on Wednesday. Jakob Chicoyne tied for 12th individually at 2-over 218 to lead the Monarchs.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

ODAC honors McDowell

Virginia Wesleyan’s Jack McDowell has been named the ODAC Pitcher of the Week.

The junior right-hander tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed three hits to pick up the victory in a 3-1 win over Washington & Lee on Saturday.

  • Scott Crosson went 3 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs and Brayden Mazzoni homered and drove in three runs as Christopher Newport (19-16) routed Eastern Mennonite 17-0 on Wednesday.
  • Jaxon Masterson went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Hampden-Sydney (17-18) collected 15 hits in an 11-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan (10-18) on Wednesday in Virginia Beach. Nick Valentin had two hits for the Marlins.
  • Jamie Laskofski had two hits and three RBIs to lead William & Mary to a 9-3 victory over Navy on Tuesday night in Annapolis, Maryland. Lucas Carmichael added two hits and two RBIs for the Tribe (16-24), who have won three straight. Starter Chad Yates and W&M five relievers combined for nine strikeouts.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

CNU gets split

Brooke Greaver went 3 for 4 with a home run and Olivia Tullous added a homer and two RBIs as Christopher Newport defeated Roanoke College 11-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday in Salem.

Roanoke won the second game. 4-2.

  • Kat Rodriguez and Sanaa Thompson drove in three runs apiece to lead North Carolina to a 12-1 victory over Norfolk State on Wednesday in Chapel Hill. Ennovi Sandoval drove in the lone run for the Spartans (21-18).
  • Virginia Wesleyan’s Morgan Tucker has been named the ODAC Player of the Week. She hit .473 with seven RBIs in six games.
