Probable starters: RHP Dax Whitney (3-3, 4.63) vs. LHP Sebastian Gonzalez (3-0, 3.96)
This and that: Whitney is making his 12th start of the season and trying break out of a two-game lull. The 6-foot-5 freshman allowed 10 runs and nine hits in his last two starts, during which he tossed just four innings and failed to last beyond the third inning. The rough patch comes at the end of an up-and-down April that saw Whitney go 0-1 with three no-decisions. … The Beavers not only replaced Nelson Keljo with Eric Segura in the rotation in Friday’s opener, but also made multiple tweaks to the top of the lineup. Shortstop Aiva Arquette, who had hit out of the two hole all season, was moved to the leadoff spot. Junior outfielder Easton Talt, who had hit leadoff the last 25 games, was moved to the three hole. And Gavin Turley was moved to the two hole. The changes worked, as Arquette (2 for 5, double, walk, three runs scored) and Turley (2 for 4, double, two walks, three runs scored) had difference-making performances at the top of the order. … Eight of nine OSU starters recorded a hit in the opener, and seven had multi-hit efforts. … AJ Singer and Wilson Weber delivered the biggest swings, producing a two-run double and a three-run double in the second and fourth innings, respectively. … Third baseman Trent Caraway seems to be creeping out of his extended slump. He went 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored Friday night and is 5 for 8 in his last two games. It’s the first time since April 8 and 9 that Caraway recorded hits in consecutive games. … Dallas Macias, who has been in a season-long funk, also had a two-hit night, finishing with his second multi-hit game of the season and first since April 5. He’s 3 for 8 with three runs scored in his last two games and has logged hits in consecutive games for the first time since March 9 and 11. … The Beavers hit six doubles in the opener, equaling their season high. … Turley hit an RBI single in the second inning Friday, giving him 174 in his OSU career. He’s tied with Adley Rutschman for second place on the Beavers’ all-time list and sits five shy of Michael Conforto’s school record. … Oregon State is 11-2 this season against Big West Conference teams.
