Be Our Guest: Kristi Dannelley’s How-To’s of Hosting

Holiday dinners, birthday celebrations, the occasional cozy weekend brunch — you never truly need a reason to gather, but moments like these practically write the invitations themselves.

Kristi Dannelley is no stranger to these moments, and despite the demands of work and home life, she often channels her passion for hosting into charming, intimate parties for family and friends.

We sat down with Dannelley on the heels of her own birthday celebration to learn how the big night came together and her go-to advice for bringing something special to the everyday table.

Kristi’s How-To’s of Hosting

1. First things first, just commit to having the party. We’ve become so immersed in the digital world that we’re all starved for real connection. Use any excuse to gather: birthdays, holidays, life milestones or simply because you want to bring people together.

2. Second, don’t complicate the meal. The food and drink don’t need to be fancy or fussy, just reliably good. Stick with the tried and true, whether it be a simple recipe or your favorite caterer.

3. Prep as much as you can in advance. I usually set my table a few days beforehand and do as much food and drink prep as possible the day before. A relaxed host is a fun host.

4. Make it special. Everyone has their own talents, so try to incorporate details in your event or dinner that highlight your personality. I love all things tabletop, and I find that it makes my guests feel special to sit down to a pretty tablescape. It doesn’t have to be over the top, just think of something you would like to share and use that to add a little extra flair.

5. Incorporate a twist. I will often tuck conversation or trivia cards under placemats and have guests find them toward the end of dinner. Lively conversation always ensues. Again, it’s all about connection.

Favorite local businesses for hosting must-haves

Dillard’s, Tipton & Hurst and Pretties & Grace all have great tabletop selections. I love to do my own florals, and Oh Hey Bouquet in Benton helps me source the perfect flowers. Party Time Rental and Events is my go-to for rentals.

About the Birthday Bash

THE VISION
I wanted a small and understated event that showcased the historic beauty of The Arlington and allowed guests to mingle and enjoy good conversation. I chose a neutral palette of white, cream and gold with pops of green.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Because it was my 50th birthday celebration, I indulged myself and incorporated all of my personal favorites: luxe stationery, elegant florals, bow details, pops of gold and green and a sassy playlist.

LOCAL VENDORS
Venue: The Arlington in Hot Springs (I grew up celebrating important events at The Arlington including birthdays, reunions and I even got engaged across the street, so it was special to return there for my 50th. I love that the new owner is committed to renovating her to her former glory). Floral source: Oh Hey Bouquet. Truffle gifts: Kilwins. Entertainment: Glen Mack did an amazing job with the music.
