Downtown Phoenix isn’t short on places to catch a concert, but few match the epic vibes and iconic status of PHX Arena. Since debuting 33 years ago as America West Arena, the 17,071-person venue at Jefferson and Second streets has hosted thousands of gigs by touring artists. Sure, it’s widely known as the home court of the Phoenix Suns — hence its longtime moniker as the “Purple Palace” — but where PHX Arena truly comes alive is as a concert venue. It’s experienced a few name changes — most recently being known as Footprint Center — but has still been lit up over the decades by the likes of U2, Garth Brooks, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna and the late Frank Sinatra.
