Honolulu police are asking for the public’s help in finding the suspect in Friday night’s acid attack of a 30-year-old man in Chinatown.

Homicide Lt. Deena Thoemmes held a news conference today at police headquarters offering surveillance images of a suspect crossing the street as well as a sketch of the suspect.

Thoemmes said the male victim had just picked up food to take to his workplace about 11:40 p.m. when an unknown man approached him on the sidewalk, asked him a few questions before suddenly throwing an unknown liquid on him.

The victim returned to his workplace, and coworkers called 911.

Emergency Medical Services responded and brought the man to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

HPD patrol officers initiated an assault investigation.

The Honolulu Fire Department tested the liquid and confirmed the liquid to be sulfuric acid.

The suspect is described as 6-foot tall and in his 20s to 30s with a slim build. He was wearing a long-sleeved blue hooded Dri-Fit shirt, black pants, black athletic shoes and black-framed glasses.

He carried a black backpack, and was carrying a red or maroon Hydroflask.

Thoemmes said the victim has been upgraded to serious condition.

She said the victim did not know the suspect.

The charge for the attack could range anywhere from a first-degree assault to attempted murder.

Thoemmes said it was too early in the investigation to tell whether this case was related to two other attacks in 2024 and 2023.

“Policing works best with the community by our side,” she said. “We ask the public to remain vigilant, stay aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity immediately. Your awareness can help prevent future incidents.”

Anyone with information concerning the suspect is asked to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300. Anonymous tips may be submitted through the P3 Tips app.
