National Guard in D.C.: ‘Trying to stop the bleeding’

Re: “Public safety: Military might vs. strategic approaches” (Aug. 13, Northwest Voices):

I learned in the military a very important routine to treat an injured fellow soldier. The first step is to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding does not stop, the other three steps do not matter.

President Donald Trump has sent the National Guard to Washington, D.C., because the leadership of the nation’s capital city either cannot or will not adequately address the rampant crime in the city that makes the downtown and even some suburban streets unsafe, especially at night. It is not the president’s job to provide jail space or funding for remedial efforts to address this crime in D.C. He is trying to stop the bleeding.
