A man killed two Tremonton-Garland police officers who were responding to a domestic disturbance call Sunday night.

The two Tremonton-Garland Police Department officers who died in the line of duty Sunday night were Sgt. Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada.
The officers were responding to multiple 911 calls coming from a Tremonton neighborhood. One officer, the first to respond, was talking to an occupant of the house about a domestic issue. Soon thereafter, a man shot and killed the officer, police said. A second officer, responding to the first, was also killed by gunfire.
Police haven’t said who responded to the home first.

Sorensen, 56 at the time of his death, served 16 years in the department, first joining the Garland Police Department before the two cities teamed up, according to a news release from the Utah Department of Public Safety. He was a native of Garland.
Sorensen and his wife, Lanette Sorensen, were honored for their public service to Garland in 2020 with the city’s Wheelon Award. Lanette Sorensen has served as the city’s emergency manager and as a volunteer firefighter, according to a 2020 Tremonton Leader story.
Lee Sorensen also won a distinguished service award from the Tremonton Fire Department in February for his support to firefighters and EMT units. In his free time, according to the Tremonton Leader story, Sorensen competed in Spartan Races, a brand of obstacle course events.
On a Police Department Facebook post about a procession honoring the officers, one resident remembered Sorensen for “the extra mile he took for victims of domestic violence.” Another said he was “great” with her family when they had to make a call to police.
Sorensen is survived by his wife and children.

Estrada, 31, started his career with the Logan Police Department in 2017 before serving stints with the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office and North Park Police Department, according to the Department of Public Safety release. He joined the Tremonton-Garland team this year as an officer and member of the community outreach team. He also enjoyed doing CrossFit, an exercise regimen known for its high-intensity functional workouts.
One resident commenting on the Police Department’s Facebook page recalled how Estrada had given her kids stickers recently, while another called him “the nicest officer in Box Elder.”
Estrada is survived by his wife, Brittany, and their two children, Cienna and Luka.
