Second-year quarterback Drake Maye was voted to be a captain by his teammates.
The Patriots are six days out from their 2025 season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. With that, the team announced its captains before their final Monday practice before Week 1’s contest.
Six New England players were named to the leadership role, as voted on by their teammates. Head coach Mike Vrabel relayed the voting results to the team.
Here are the Patriots’ team captains under Vrabel’s first year as New England’s HC:
TE Hunter Henry
CB Marcus Jones
LB Harold Landry III
QB Drake Maye
ST Brenden Schooler
LB Robert Spillane
Henry is the sole returning captain from last year’s Patriots team. However, he did not begin the 2024 season as a captain (original 2024 captains: David Andrews, Ja’Whaun Bentley, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Cardona, Jabrill Peppers, Deatrich Wise, Jr.). Henry replaced David Andrews when the now-retired center landed on injured reserve in October.
Henry and Spillane are the only two players among the six named captains with past NFL captaincy. Spillane, who played under Vrabel, served as a Raiders captain the last two seasons. He inked a three-year, $33 million deal with New England in March.
“It’s such an honor to be named a captain,” Spillane told reporters after practice. “You don’t take these moments lightly. I pour my heart and soul into this. To be recognized by my teammates is everything to me.”
Jones, Maye, Schooler, and Landry are all first-time captains. Landry, who also played under Vrabel on the Tennessee Titans for five seasons, was signed to a 3-year, $43.5 million contract in March.
“Was I surprised? I mean, I knew it was a possibility,” Landry said after practice. “… I don’t really say much, I try to lead by example and I’m just glad that my boys in here respect and appreciate it.”
