Valentino Garavani, fashion icon to the stars known as ‘the Sheik of chic,’ dead at 93

Valentino Garavani, the Italian fashion designer died Monday in Rome at the age of 93.

“Our founder, Valentino Garavani passed away today at his Roman residence, surrounded by his loved ones,” a social media post read from Valentino’s Instagram account.

“The lying in state will be held at PM23 in Piazza Mignanelli 23 on Wednesday, Jan. 21st and Thursday, Jan. 22nd, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The funeral will take place on Friday, Jan. 23rd at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, in Piazza della Repubblica 8 in Rome, at 11 a.m.”

He appeared in 2006’s “The Devil Wears Prada” as himself.

Valentino, known as “the last emperor” and “the Sheik of chic,” was a favorite of stars such as Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway, among others.

Before today’s stars it was the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and Sophia Loren.

Jackie Kennedy bought and wore six Valentino dresses following John F. Kennedy’s assassination. She also wore a Valentino gown for her wedding to Aristotle Onassis.
