The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fatal house fire that engulfed a Dexter home Friday night.

The Dexter Fire Department responded about 5:29 p.m. to a structure fire at 62 Grove Street in Dexter and found the two-story home engulfed in flames.

One person had escaped the fire, but fire crews learned that a second person was still trapped inside.

While extinguishing the fire, firefighters found a deceased man on the second floor of the home.

Because of the death, the Office of the Maine Fire Marshal responded to the scene and conducted an investigation into the cause of the fire.

According to the Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire appeared to be related to cooking, and had started in the kitchen.

The deceased victim was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where a formal identification will be made.

The investigation is ongoing.
