Driver dies after car crashes into Duwamish River in Tukwila

A 60-year-old Carnation man died Saturday night after his car crashed off Highway 99 into the Duwamish River.

Kent Schwartzenberger was driving a 2018 BMW north around 8:50 p.m. when he took the offramp toward Tukwila International Boulevard. The car failed to turn with a bend in the road, then struck the guardrail on the right shoulder and crashed into the river, according to state troopers.

The emergency response blocked the road for about three hours.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation. Schwartzenberger had been wearing a seatbelt, troopers said.

“The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death to find out if it was a medical event or not,” Trooper Rick Johnson said in an email.
