In 1976, as America commemorated its Bicentennial,
visionary Black elders in the B.U.I.L.D. organization made a bold decision: our freedom
deserved a celebration too. From that conviction, Buffalo Juneteenth was born.
Fifty years later, Buffalo Juneteenth has grown into one of the nation’s largest Juneteenth
celebrations, welcoming more than 20,000 attendees over two days and standing as a
powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and self-determination.
The 50th Anniversary celebration begins Friday, June 5, with a ceremonial Freedom Flag
Raising at noon in Niagara Square. Later that evening, the Juneteenth Anniversary Gala will
take place at 5:00 p.m. at Classic V Banquet and Conference Center, 2425 Niagara Falls
Boulevard. The Gala will honor the elders, founders, and community leaders whose vision-
built Buffalo Juneteenth into what it is today.
The Juneteenth Parade, one of the festival’s most anticipated traditions and one of the
largest celebrations of its kind in the nation, will take place Saturday, June 13 at 10:00 a.m.,
launching a weekend of celebration. Featuring bands, drill teams, floats, and community
organizations, the parade brings generations together in a shared expression of pride and
joy.
At the heart of this milestone are the elders and volunteers whose decades of commitment
sustained the festival. From early-morning set-up crews to planners, artists, donors, and
community leaders, their collective work reflects the unity that defines Buffalo Juneteenth.
Juneteenth President Carrone Evon Crump reflected on the significance of this moment:
“This anniversary is about honoring the foundation built by our elders while preparing the
next generation to lead Buffalo Juneteenth into the future.”
A SAFE, FAMILY-CENTERED CELEBRATION
Buffalo Juneteenth remains committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and family-friendly
environment for all. This year’s activities include arts and culture, musical entertainment,
health and wellness exhibits, Underground Railroad tours, the Griots Village, vendors, the
2nd Annual 2-Mile Run, Sankofa programming, and events throughout the Michigan Street
African American Heritage Corridor.
EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION
As the festival looks ahead, new initiatives will uplift youth leadership and engagement.
The introduction of Juneteenth Youth Ambassadors will strengthen intergenerational
mentorship while bringing fresh ideas and innovation to the festival’s future.
The first-ever Youth Empowerment Zone will provide programming focused on
leadership development, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, wellness, and creative
expression—ensuring that the next generation is prepared to carry the legacy forward.
As part of the 50th Anniversary celebration, Buffalo Juneteenth proudly reintroduces the
Malik–Malika Contest, a tradition rooted in 1976. This initiative reflects a continued
commitment to cultivating leadership, confidence, and cultural pride in young people.
