Kauai murder suspect pleads not guilty

COURTESY KPD

William “Billy” Sinclair, 51, of Kilauea.

Murder defendant William “Billy” Sinclair appeared in the Kauai Circuit Court for arraignment this morning and pleaded not guilty to the 28 charges against him.

Sinclair was indicted Wednesday on 28 counts, including second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his former tenant, Sergio Hernandez, second-degree attempted murder and multiple felony charges that involve firearms.

Judge Michael Soong noted that the state has indicated that it will pursue extended terms of imprisonment if Sinclair is convicted, which would mean life without the possibility of parole.

The judge set his trial date for Sept. 28.

Sinclair’s court-appointed attorney, Keith Shigetomi, requested a bail hearing, saying that his bail was raised from $500,000 to $1.5 million, and he is now being held without bail.

A bail hearing is set for June 25.
