Pedestrian critically hurt after being hit by van on Kauai

A 58-year-old pedestrian was critically injured after he was struck by a vehicle as he crossed Kuhio Highway Friday night, Kauai police said today.

The victim, a Hanamaulu man, was walking west on the highway’s eastbound shoulder at about 10:45 p.m. when he tried to cross the road near Laukona Street and was struck by a 2008 Toyota van driven by a 77-year-old Kapaa man, police said.

The victim was taken to Wilcox Medical Center in critical but stable condition, and was later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for further treatment, according to a Kauai Police Department news release.

Police said speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash and that toxicology results are pending. The highway was closed for over two hours while emergency crews responded and officers investigated.
