Honolulu lifeguards rescued two stranded divers on Tuesday afternoon about a half-mile off Wailupe Beach Park.
At about 4:35 p.m., Honolulu Ocean Safety responded to two divers who got separated from their boat after it drifted about 1,000 yards from their location.
Two off-duty lifeguards who happened to be paddling in the area spotted the divers, who were having trouble getting back to their boat. The lifeguards contacted Ocean Safety using an Apple Watch, and remained with the divers until rescue personnel arrived on scene.
Ocean Safety reached the divers and brought them back to their boat. No injuries were reported, and no further assistance was required.
“The Honolulu Ocean Safety Department commends the actions of the off-duty lifeguards, whose vigilance and quick response helped ensure a safe outcome,” said the department in a statement. “Ocean Safety reminds all boaters and divers to maintain awareness of changing ocean conditions and to ensure vessels are properly secured while engaged in offshore activities.”
Additionally, Ocean Safety said, divers should also carry a reliable means of communication whenever possible.
