The Lihue Airport Rescue and Fire Unit leaves the fire scene to set up a water relay on Wednesday during the multi-vehicle fire near the Isenberg Park in Lihue.
Kauai firefighters extinguished a major blaze at a scrap metal yard in Lihue on Wednesday afternoon.
The Kauai Fire Department received a report just before 2:15 p.m. of multiple vehicles on fire at the PCCC scrap metal vehicle storage area in Lihue. Several units, including Rescue 3 aboard the Air 1 helicopter, responded.
The Kauai Police Department also responded to the fire.
Upon arrival at about 2:40 p.m., Kauai firefighters found several vehicles engulfed in flames, which had spread to an outdoor storage area.
Crews immediately began suppression efforts to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading beyond the affected area. Due to the fire’s size and volume of smoke, the Kauai Fire Department requested assistance from additional resources.
Firefighters brought the fire under control at about 4:03 p.m., then worked alongside heavy equipment operators to separate and move piles of vehicles and scrap to ensure that any remaining hotspots were extinguished.

No injuries were reported.
“On behalf of the Kauai Fire Department, I want to extend our sincere mahalo to the Lihue Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting personnel for their swift and decisive response,” said Battalion Chief Bryan Doo in a news release. “Their immediate support, including the deployment of Rescue 44 and its High Reach Extendible Turret to suppress the fire, played a critical role in bringing the incident under control more quickly and preventing further extension.”
He added, “This response is a testament to the strong partnership between our agencies and the professionalism, skill, and dedication of the ARFF team. We are grateful for their assistance and proud to work alongside them in protecting our community.”
Personnel remained for several more hours to make sure the fire was fully extinguished. The scene was cleared just before 7:15 p.m.
