HFD airlifts stranded hikers from Moanalua Middle Ridge Trail

Honolulu Fire Department personnel rescued two stranded hikers on Moanalua Middle Ridge Trail this afternoon.

HFD received a 911 call at 12:15 p.m. reporting that two hikers in their 30s were stuck along the trail due to difficult terrain, officials said in a news release. The man and woman were unable to descend the trail on their own, HFD said.

The first HFD unit arrived at the trail at 12:31 p.m., established a command and used a utility terrain vehicle to drive into the trail as far as possible before hiking on foot. Another HFD unit established a landing zone to prepare for an air rescue.

HFD’s Air 1 helicopter located the hikers at 12:52 p.m and delivered rescuers close to their location.

The rescue personnel reached the hikers at 1:06 p.m., confirming that there were no injuries. The hikers were airlifted to the landing zone with the second hiker arriving at about 2:15 p.m., HFD officials said.
