Black Rock Pizza in Kona shut down due to rodent infestation

The Hawaii Department of Health has issued a red placard to Black Rock Pizza in Kona, ordering its closure due to an active rodent infestation.

Black Rock Pizza, operated by Black Rock Pizza #2 Kona LLC, at Coconut Marketplace, 75-5813 Alii Drive, must remain closed until a follow-up inspection clears it of all critical violations.

During a routine inspection on Wednesday, a DOH inspector found the following:

>> An abundant amount of fresh and old rodent feces throughout the facility, in food, and on food-contact surfaces;

>> Foods were not stored to prevent contamination;

>> Premises were not maintained free of insects, rodents and other pests;

>> The handwashing sink was obstructed; and

>> Physical facilities were not maintained and cleaned.

DOH is requiring Black Rock Pizza to discard all contaminated food products, and to have a professional pest control operator service the establishment. The department also requires the business to seal all holes in the walls and ceiling and to thoroughly clean and disinfect all food-contact and non-food-contact surfaces.

Black Rock Pizza, a local pizzeria, described itself as a “homegrown pizza chain” that uses locally sourced ingredients. It also has locations in Captain Cook and Kihei, Maui, and has earned 5-star reviews online.
