The state Department of Health temporarily shut the Subway Kunia, at 94-535 Kupuohi St., on Friday for a “critical” safety violation.

Hawaii health officials said they have shut down a Subway sandwich shop in Waipahu “due to insufficient refrigeration to safely maintain foods”

The Subway Kunia, at 94-535 Kupuohi St. and operated by World Subs Inc., “received a red placard on Friday and must remain closed until health inspectors conducts a follow-up inspection and determines all critical violations have been corrected,” the Hawaii Department of Health said in a news release. “The establishment may not prepare, serve or distribute food to the public, including for off-site events, until it is authorized to reopen.”

Officials said that during a routine inspection Friday the inspector observed a “critical violation” because of improper cold-holding temperatures. “All four refrigeration units on-site, including the walk-in refrigerator, were operating above required temperatures.”

Before being allowed to reopen, the shop must ensure that the refrigeration units are capable of maintaining foods at 41 degrees Fahrenheit or below, health officials said.

A follow-up inspection is scheduled for Tuesday, they said.
