Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd posted from various Boston sites during the Fan Expo.
All four Hobbits from the “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy — Dominic Monaghan, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, and Billy Boyd — dined and explored Boston together this weekend, using Fan Expo Boston as a reason to get the band back together.
“Myself and Elijah picked the restaurant for us to go to on Friday night, which I guess we’re going to keep secret just in case we cause a scene at the restaurant,” Monaghan told Boston.com previously with a laugh. “But we’ll tell people about it Saturday morning.”
Right on cue, Monaghan unveiled the restaurant in a Saturday instagram post: La Royal Cambridge, a Peruvian spot and 2023 James Beard Award semifinalist for Best New Restaurant.
“Four Halflings. Three cocktails. Two desserts. ONE great night of conversation. More to come. #becurious shoutout to the couple in the back. Well played,” Monaghan posted, referring to the couple in back of them that unintentionally photobombed the Hobbit reunion feast.
The four spent the weekend in Boston, celebrating a quarter century of all things “Lord of the Rings,” reuniting for “An Evening with the Hobbits: In Celebration of 25 Years” Saturday at Fan Expo, and serving us a true Hobbit Second Breakfast on Sunday.
“Another successful weekend,” Monaghan posted afterward.
He had some words for People Magazine, who reported that the cast looked “unrecognizable” in their 25-year Boston reunion photo, along with Astin’s photo of the gang at La Royale.
“Also hi @people I would argue that out of any cast seen in photos 25 years later we almost look exactly the same,” Monaghan posted. “All four of us have been luckily blessed with slow aging skillz! What an odd headline! “Unrecognisable”?! Hard disagree!”

After Peruvian fare, the Hobbitses quest for Boston adventure continued.
“Great American history, coming out of that part of the country. Very friendly place, and the last time I was there, I remember the restaurants being very cool. So we’re looking forward to having a night out in Boston,” Monaghan, 49, told me in a phone interview before the event.
They checked all boxes. They took some selfies with Boston statues (American history, check) and apparently dined at Neptune Oyster in the North End, a seafood spot that’s earned recent raves from the Globe, New York Times and Bon Appetite Magazine.
Meanwhile, [breaks into song] the only brew for the brave and truuue……
Comes from then Green Dragon! The one we drink in our hometown.
Yup, you know those Hobbits found Boston’s historic Irish pub The Green Dragon, also the Hobbits’ drinking hole and subject of Hobbit drinking song. Boyd posted a pic of the Boston pub, along with the Hobbit drinking song lyrics.
And just so we can all have the song stuck in our head together … Cheers, Boston.
