A Piscataquis County man is charged with aggravated assault in connection with an attack that killed one person and seriously injured another in Guilford on Sunday.
Maine State Police said Monday that the charges against Ryan Carleton, 49, of Guilford, are expected to be elevated.
The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office responded to 24 Pine St. on Sunday evening for a well-being check, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release. Sheriff’s deputies found a man and woman who were seriously injured next door at 26 Pine St. and requested assistance from state police.
The man died while being taken to a hospital, Moss said, while the woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was considered to be in critical condition Monday.
The victims’ identities were not immediately released Monday afternoon. The man’s body was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy.
Carleton is being held in the Piscataquis County Jail and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday, Moss said.
Police believe the alleged assault was an isolated incident.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call 207-973-3700, ext. 9, and ask to speak with Detective Jacob Ferland.
