Original Big Island Shave Ice Co., widely praised for the texture and flavor of its namesake offering, is setting up shave on the Ninth Island of Las Vegas.
OBISIC, as it’s known in Hawaii, has been touting its arrival for a few months on Instagram. A recent post includes an interior image of the new store with the company logo.
“Las Vegas, we’re getting closer!,” the post reads. “Piece by piece, our new home is coming together — and seeing OBISIC on the wall makes it all feel REAL. From the Big Island to the 9th Island, we can’t wait to share our family tradition, our flavors, and a whole lot of aloha with you.”
The shave ice shop has not shared the location of its Vegas store or an opening date, but public building records indicate OBISIC is going into 10271 S. Eastern Ave., Suite 115, Henderson, a few doors down from Gaetano’s Ristorante. Previous occupants of the space include Sage Christian Creamery, CJ’s Italian Ice & Custard and, way back in the day, a dress shop.
In Hawaii, OBISIC features build-your-own shave ice with five choices of ice cream (including Kona coffee, vanilla and haupia), more than two dozen choices of syrup (traditional, cream, real fruit) and seven choices of toppings (including li hing mui powder, mochi and gummy bears).
OBISIC traces its origins to 1957 and the mobile market operated by Lorraine Berdon Kaono at Spencer Beach Park in Waimea on the Big Island. Visit obisic.squarespace.com.
