Recently, a letter writer commented on the unkempt appearance of the Eastern Cemetery (“Portland’s Eastern Cemetery needs some TLC,” July 31). The volunteer group Spirits Alive, as one of its many activities, regularly performs the mind-boggling feat of close-mowing a roughly six-acre lawn — filled with at least 3,000 monuments, markers and standing gravestones.
Their caretaking can be seen daily by the thousands of people who travel the busy stretch of Congress Street running alongside the cemetery’s well-maintained swath of greenery and stone.
