HBO exited the boxing game in 2018 after a remarkable 45 years of bouts dating to Jan. 22, 1973, when George Foreman defeated Joe Frazier.
The pay channel is dipping its toes back into the sport with a pilot order for a boxing comedy set in Las Vegas. The as-yet-untitled series hails from Issa Rae, the creator and star of the HBO comedy “Insecure.”
The new series is currently known as “Untitled Male Friendship Show,” according to Deadline.
The outlet described the comedy as focusing on “a 30-year-old barber, aspiring sports manager and professional best friend” to a young fighter “as they navigate ambition, insecurity, loneliness and the double-edged sword of success within the high-stakes world of professional boxing in Las Vegas.”
“Insecure” ran from 2016 to 2021. Rae, showrunner Prentice Penny, who’ll oversee the new series, and cast members will take the stage at The Palazzo Theatre on Sept. 25 as part of “Insecure: The 10th Anniversary Tour.”
