A restaurant that conjures thick billows of Las Vegas history is reopening on East Fremont Street in downtown.
Siegel’s 1941 in El Cortez takes its name from mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, an early owner of El Cortez, and the year the property debuted. The restaurant closed in April, and at the time, it was unclear if the restaurant was shutting for a refresh or for renovation into another concept or for something else.
On Tuesday, the property announced that the space would reopen in early fall as Siegel’s 1941, serving breakfast and lunch daily. In the evening, the space becomes Alex Prime Steakhouse.
The morning at Siegel’s features a.m. standards: bagel and lox; a breakfast sandwich layering fried egg, bacon, cheddar, tomato and aïoli on toasted brioche; two eggs with matzoh brei; and ham steak with eggs and hash browns.
Lunch features seafood Louie with Maine lobster and jumbo shrimp, a loaded wedge salad, an Angus cheeseburger, and the return of the prime rib special, a longtime Siegel’s signature. Desserts run to New York cheesecake, chocolate cake, an ice cream sundae and milkshakes.
The remodeled space, from Kenneth Ussenko Design and Jive Architecture, seats more than 150, with emerald green banquettes, Cognac leather seating, paneled walls with gold detailing, arched mirrored cabinetry and an expanse of coffered ceiling.
