Allegiant Stadium has established a unique math equation in five years of staging concerts: One superstar plus another superstar equals a single spectacle.
That was the formula Sunday at “The R&B Tour.” We have Usher Raymond and Chris Brown as the “R&B,” blending genres and surnames. The duo returns to Allegiant on Sept. 18.
The Labor Day weekend show wrapped the co-headliners’ two-night stand in Las Vegas. The tour stop took over the stadium where Usher last worked a much shorter set in February of 2024, when he was joined by Alicia Keys, will.i.am, Lil Jon, Ludacris and H.E.R at halftime of Super Bowl LVIII.
In “The R&B Tour,” Usher and Brown have blown up two massive concert experiences in the same show. The format was similar to the Kendrick Lamar-Sza show in May 2025, with the headliners alternating shorter sets in a single performance, and uniting for collaborations.
This is no traditional headliner-and-opener pairing. The format cuts stage-turnover time and, just as important, keeps either established superstar from appearing to open for the other. On a co-headlining tour, such matters matter.
Of the two, Usher’s Vegas history runs deeper than Brown’s, with fiery resident productions at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace and Dolby Live at Park MGM.
The shows at Allegiant might be the last time we see Usher performing a show in Las Vegas for the near future. He said during an unveiling of his waxed self at Madame Tussauds last week that he was focusing on immersive options and business interests.
Still, the 47-year-old artist has not fully shot down speculation he’ll return to the stage in Las Vegas, where he and his wife, music-industry exec Jennifer Goicoechea, have a home. Usher presides over a multifaceted empire, is the point.
As a Vegas resident headliner, the 37-year-old Brown has been primarily a nightclub force. I saw him perform a late-night, early morning set at Drai’s Nightclub at then-Cromwell in June 2022. I was blown away, by his talent, energy, and also his CO2 cannons.
This was not the first time Usher and Brown have appeared in the same Las Vegas event. They were both in the lineup for the 2023 Lovers & Friends festival at Las Vegas Festival Grounds. The longtime friends were reportedly involved in an altercation at the Floyd Mayweather-owned Skate Rock recreation center on Boulder Highway, the night before both were set to appear at the festival.
Both performers made the stage the next day. Suffice to say, they have patched things up.
The co-stars delivered a two-punch combination at Allegiant Stadium. We had the massive LED screens, synced lasers and fire rising from the stage. Brown, too, ascended from the performance deck, rising some 50 feet in a Cirque-style, aerial harness during “Oyo.”
The crowd relished the act, and it drew an eruption of emotion. It was terrifically executed. But Pink, who races and somersaults high over the entire venue, is still the pacesetter for such high-rising stunts.
Usher was fine to quick-step through the multileveled catwalk directly into the floor sections. He performed a “U Remind Me” Vegas-fashioned set (Delilah at the Wynn came to mind), named Raymond’s cabaret room. He took on that number while wearing a bedazzled, pinstriped, burgundy-and-white suit and matching fedora.
Always adventurous, attire-wise, the showman also donned a cherry-red, leather suit (suitable for choreographed crotch-grabbing) with a sideways ball cap, among his many wardrobe changes.
Usher’s set list did not disappoint, dotted with “Yeah!” “Confessions” and “OMG,” Bad Girl,” “Superstar” and “My Way” (the title of his Dolby Live residency.
Brown, a master of dance and also staged, simulated sex scenes (much boudoir activity in this performance), His set list featured “Run It,” “No Guidance,” “Wall to Wall,” “Go Crazy,” “Look at Me Now,” “Yo (Excuse Me Miss),” “Say Goodbye,” “Poppin’” and “Take You Down.”
The two teamed effectively on “It Depends,” “Party” and “New Flame.” The headliners worked either side of the stadium on a diamond-shaped walkway that surrounded the standing section and allowed ventures to the middle of the venue.
R&B stars Eric Bellinger and Mario are guests on “The R&B Tour,” which will run 59 total dates through Dec. 11-12 at Tampa’s Raymond (coincidentally) James Stadium.
Las Vegas has a way of pulling out whoever happens to be in town for the weekend, and Saturday night it was Golden Globe Award-winning actor Taraji P. Henson (“Empire” on Fox and the feature film “Hustle & Flow’). She was treated to the full, grind-it-out, Usher treatment.
The pairing of two superstars in the same strata and genre is rare. “The R&B Tour” is maximizing the opportunity. As Usher’s manager Ron Laffitte told Billboard at the start of the tour, “Rarely do we see these kinds of combinations … What would Michael Jackson and Prince have looked like? Unfortunately, we never had the blessing of seeing those two share the stage.”
But the “R&B” brothers are sharing a hint of what such a night would look like. A different level of iconography, and a different time, of course. But this partnership meets the moment.
