Hawaii public schools and non-essential state and county offices in Kauai County will remain closed through Friday as the island digs out from Hurricane Lowell, officials announced today.
But schools and government offices that were closed today on other islands will reopen Wednesday, according to the governor’s office.
In Kauai County, state and county offices, the Kauai Community College, and all public schools including Niihau High & Elementary will remain closed through the week as crews restore power, remove debris and address other storm impacts, the governor’s office said in a news release. The state Judiciary is assessing facilities and capacity in Kauai County and will make an announcement when plans are finalized, officials said.
“Conditions have improved enough for Oahu to fully reopen Wednesday, but Kauai continues to face significant impacts from Hurricane Lowell,” Gov. Josh Green said in a statement. “Keeping offices and schools closed in Kauai County will give utility, public works and emergency crews the space they need to safely restore power, clear debris and support affected communities.”
