Post-storm brown water advisories issued across Hawaii

The state Health Department has issued numerous brown water advisories in the wake of Hurricane Lowell.

Brown water advisories have been issued for:

>> Waters surrounding the entire island of Oahu;

>> Waters surrounding the entire island of Kauai;

>> Waters from Maalaea to Keawekapu, Maui;

>> Waters from Hanakao‘o Point to Papalaua, West Maui;

>> Waters from Keokea Beach Park to South Point, Hawaii island;

Additionally, prior to Hurricane Lowell, brown water advisories were in place in August for:

>> Waters from Hamakua Coast to Hilo Bay, Hawaii island;

>> Waters from Honuapo to Punaluu, Hawaii island

The Hawaii Department of Health advises beach users to stay out of waters that appear brown or murky, especially following storms or heavy rain, even in areas where a brown water advisory has not been issued.

After any storm event, DOH said, runoff may contain sewage, harmful micro-organisms and chemicals from commercial and industrial sources.

The department recommends staying out of brown waters until after the rain has stopped, and the beach has received full sunshine, for 48 to 72 hours.

“If the water is brown, turn around,” said DOH.

The public should also avoid swimming, wading in, or drinking water from any freshwater streams or ponds to prevent leptospirosis.
