Maui police identify driver in fatal Lahaina crash

Maui police have identified the victim of a fatal crash on Honoapiilani Highway early Wednesday morning as Manuel Olivas, 18, of Lahaina.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Maui Police Department, Olivas was driving a white 2000 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Honoapiilani Highway at about 1:33 a.m. at high speed when he lost control.

The Silverado went off the roadway, down an embankment, and collided into a tree on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Olivas, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said speed is considered a factor in this collision, but have not yet determined if drugs or alcohol were involved.

The investigation remains ongoing.
