High schools Tuesday: Deering volleyball upends Lewiston/Lisbon

Led by 16 kills from Blake Gayle and strong all-around play from Eva Scipione, Deering handed Lewiston/Lisbon its first volleyball loss of the season Tuesday, defeating the Blue Devils in three sets at Portland.

Gayle surpassed 500 career kills as Deering improved to 5-3, winning 25-22, 25-21, 25-11.

The Blue Devils dropped to 6-1.

PORTLAND 3, KENNEBUNK 2: Asanti Bendasta had 18 kills, five aces and eight blocks, and the Bulldogs (4-4) rallied from two sets down to beat the Rams (3-4) in Portland, 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-12.

Cece Waring contributed five kills and two blocks, while Sophie Savova had five kills for Portland.

FIELD HOCKEY

BONNY EAGLE 2, SOUTH PORTLAND/WESTBROOK 0: Ella Karlis scored midway through the second quarter, and Amelia Fries converted a penalty corner after time expired in the third, and the Scots (3-5) shut out the Blazin’ Riots (1-8) in South Portland.

BRUNSWICK 1, OXFORD HILLS 0: Nia Mena-Saucier’s goal lifted the Dragons (2-6) past the Vikings (3-5-1) in a Class A North tilt in Paris.

Kya Smith made six saves for Oxford Hills.

FREEPORT 4, POLAND 0: Dalila McCarthy tallied two goals, including a penalty stroke, and the Falcons (6-0) shut out the Knights (2-6) in Freeport.

Callie Bourgoin and Megan Ritz also scored for the No. 8 team in the Varsity Maine Top 10.

Layla Wurtz, Maddie Thompson and Ella Dupuis also scored. Tenley Orlando and Thompson each had two assists.

Ava Chase made seven saves for Deering/Portland.

CHEVERUS 3, THORNTON ACADEMY 1: The Stags (9-0) got goals from Sydney Brunelle, Avery Tinker and Mary McCartney in a win over the Golden Trojans (4-3) in Portland.

Jaylee Radford assisted on Tinker’s goal. Bronwyn Roberts made four saves for the unanimous No. 1 team in the Varsity Maine Top 10.

Shyla McVeigh scored and Aubree Frager stopped 10 shots for Thornton.

BIDDEFORD 4, WINDHAM 1: Mia Mariello had a goal and three assists, Milania Jackson, Rachel Lagasse and Aubrey Forcier also scored, and the Tigers (6-1) defeated the Eagles (3-4) in Biddeford.

Madelyn Burton made five saves for the No. 3 team in the Varsity Maine Top 10. Windham’s Courtney Cotter stopped 19 shots.

GORHAM 4, SCARBOROUGH 3: Sydney Quimby’s goal with 27 seconds remaining gave the Rams (5-4) a comeback win over the Red Storm (1-8) in Scarborough.

Gorham erased a 2-0 deficit with three goals in the third quarter. Hazel Dolley and Haylie Nicely scored off penalty corners, and Bryn Cunningham got the go-ahead goal after a pass from Maia Downing.

Scarborough’s Rosa Perlut tied it midway through the fourth with her second goal of the game.

Lily Howes also scored for the Red Storm.

Acadia Sylvia and Alyssa Lampen each got an assist of Gorham’s first two goals, and Nicely set up the winner.

BOYS SOCCER

PINE TREE ACADEMY 6, WISCASSET/BOOTHBAY 0: Fitzroy Hakizimana collected two goals and two assists as the Breakers (6-0) defeated the Wolverines (2-3-2) in Wiscasset.

Collin Verrill also scored twice. Rhett Tyson and Lucky Kabeya each added a goal, Cameron Brace had two assists, and keeper Abner Poland was credited with an assist.

PINE TREE ACADEMY 6, WISCASSET/BOOTHBAY 0: Fitzroy Hakizimana collected two goals and two assists as the Breakers (6-0) defeated the Wolverines (2-3-2) in Wiscasset.

Collin Verrill also scored twice. Rhett Tyson and Lucky Kabeya each added a goal, Cameron Brace had two assists, and keeper Abner Poland was credited with an assist.

LISBON 4, LAKE REGION 3: Kael Richards completed a hat trick in the second half and also set up a goal by Cooper Story as the Greyhounds (3-3-2) withstood a comeback bid by the Lakers (2-6-1) in Lisbon.

Parker Richardson matched Richards with three goals, all after halftime.

Jake Baird and Spencer Franks each were credited with an assist for Lisbon.

GIRLS SOCCER

FREEPORT 4, WELLS 0: Keeley Furtney paced the Falcons (5-2) with two goals in a win over the Warriors (0-7-1) at Freeport

Joanie Sacks and Lexi Ritcheson chipped in with a goal apiece.

CAPE ELIZABETH 6, YORK 0: Amelia Morgese tallied three goals, Alexa Mallory chipped in with two, and the Capers (7-1) downed the Wildcats (1-7-1) in Cape Elizabeth.

Pippi Hooper added a goal and an assist. Molly Brownell, Isla Litton and Alice DeGeorge each had an assist for the No. 5 team in the Varsity Maine Top 10, and Kelsie Law needed only one save for the shutout.

Ava Hickey stopped 15 shots for York.

POLAND 6, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 1: Julia and Phoebe Paradis combined for three goals and three assists to lead the Knights (8-0-1) to a rivalry win over the Patriots (3-5) in Gray.

Julia Paradis scored two goals, while Phoebe Paradis recorded a goal and three assists. Delilah Farrington and Davis Hill also scored for the Knights, and Alivia Lemieux assisted on two goals. Knights goalie Payton Blake stopped four shots.

Ashley Anderson scored and Mallory Hardiman made 14 saves for Gray-New Gloucester.

THORNTON ACADEMY 3, DEERING 2: Addison Gould scored all three goals for the Trojans (3-4-1) against the Rams (4-5) in Portland.

Gould broke a 2-2 tie when scored from a tight angle with 6:44 remaining.

Gould got her first goal less than two minutes in and made it 2-0 in the ninth minute, assisted by Addy Rush.

Matilda Freeman tallied both Deering goals, both set up by Moriya Nguema Mve. Freeman scored midway through the first half and tied it with just over 12 minutes remaining in the second half.

Adeline Poletta made six saves for Thornton, while Deering’s Keely Beyland stopped seven shots.
