Matthew Sweeney, of Paxton, was indicted by a Middlesex County grand jury on two counts of second-degree murder.
A 21-year-old man is now facing second-degree murder charges related to an August crash in North Reading that killed an Andover father and his 8-year-old daughter.
Matthew Sweeney, of Paxton, was indicted by a Middlesex County grand jury on two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of felony motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence, and operating to endanger, in connection with the Aug. 22 crash, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday. Sweeney was previously arraigned in district court on charges related to the crash; however, the second-degree murder counts are new.
Shortly before 11 p.m. on Aug. 22, Sweeney was operating an Acura MDX erratically at speeds close to 100 mph on Route 28 when he collided with a Honda stopped at a red light, the DA’s office said.
The Honda became engulfed in flames, and despite efforts by first responders and a good Samaritan, the two people inside the car died at the scene. The victims were identified as 35-year-old Samir Naili and his daughter, Kashmira Naili.
Sweeney’s arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday morning at Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn.
