Steve Aoki is a pioneer in nightclub and festival production. Sebastian Maniscalco a master at relating the inanity of everyday life.
Taken together, the unlikely pair have released a novel dance track and video, “Does Your Father Know You Dance Like That?” The collaboration hit the market Friday.
The tune is meant for all platforms, including digital and those in the nightclub. Maniscalco, an Encore Theater headliner, premiered the first version of the track during Justin Bieber’s Halloween livestream last year.
Though a comedic effort, the song’s development is no joke.
The track was produced by electronic-dance duo Parisi (brothers Marco and Jack Parisi, who have worked with Ed Sheeran and Fred Again) and Freddy Wexler (who has worked with Bieber and Blackpink).
Upon hearing the song, Bieber reportedly called out, “This is going to pop off in Ibiza,” a show of confidence related to the club scene on the Spanish island. Maniscalco countered that he was planning to headline the Coachella festival, which opens Friday night (not so).
Wexler than took the song to Aoki, who spun his magic to make the track dancefloor-ready. The two performed it at Omnia Nightclub in November, to robust response.
“Sebastian is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met and this collab was all about bringing that into the club,” says Aoki, who is from Las Vegas and a long-standing Strip headliner. “I knew I wanted to do it in an authentic way though, so it only made sense to work with Parisi on the track, who I’m also a huge fan of. It’s fun, unexpected, and perfect for the dancefloor.”
Says Maniscalco, “I’ve been dancing to other people’s music for years. Now I finally have a song of my own to move to.”
The 52-year-old comic actor also allows that Aoki “had me out promoting this thing in nightclubs until 3 o’clock in the morning, which is a real change for me. I think the last time I was out that late was 2009.”
