Multiple people were arrested at Icon Park this weekend after more than 1,000 teens stormed the park in a “Teen Takeover.”
Orange County Sheriff’s Office said more than 1,000 teens were in the park running and fighting at about 7:30 p.m. The flood of pubescents could reportedly be seen swarming the Orlando Eye from nearby high-rises, and 50 deputies were needed to break up fights and direct passers-by to safety.
Among the teens who crowded the park, nine individuals 13 to 16 years old were arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, resisting an officer without violence, affray, or trespass after warning.
Sheriff John Mina said two officers were injured and hospitalized, but have since been released and are expected to make a full recovery.
Mina said that the “takeover” had been advertised across social media, and the sheriff’s office was aware of the plan. He urges parents to warn their children of the consequences of participating in these advertised events.
The sheriff’s office says it’s aware of a similar “takeover” being planned on social media, set for May 9 at an unspecified location. Deputies say that they will be prepared to have a large presence and make arrests if this event is carried out.
A teen takeover took place at Daytona Beach during a spring break event that was heavily promoted on social media. Those party promoters are now being sued by Volusia County.
