As Rep. Jared Golden’s political career “sunsets,” he has affirmed the fears of many who supported him as a congressman. Our country is in the most dangerous position of my lifetime. To say otherwise is to deny Donald Trump’s attacks on the Constitution, his attacks on people of color, his attacks on the media and his total disregard for the rule of law. The actions of Mussolini and Hitler have been embraced by the megalomaniac undermining democracy in the United States.
Golden and his counterpart in the Senate, Susan Collins, have sacrificed their nation. Both of them have sided with this regime in almost all the legislation that has attempted to wrest control from those demanding a return to a democratic form of government. Golden and Collins have abdicated their responsibility to their oaths of office.
Congressman Golden has also abdicated the oath he took when he joined the military. Of course, Golden and Collins are not alone in this traitorous behavior, but both of them could have stood by their promises rather than facilitating the goals of this shameful regime. They have both made a mockery of the essential principles that formed our country.
Regardless of the outcome of this battle between democracy and fascism, their places in history have been irrevocably established. If the U.S. succumbs to fascism, Golden and Collins will carry that weight through eternity. If democracy wins out, they will be vilified for having done their best to destroy the country that gave them both so much.
