A Delta Airlines employee died in a fatal accident on the job at Orlando International Airport Thursday evening, according to airline officials. Identifying information such as the worker’s name, age and job title at Delta was not immediately made available Friday morning. Nor was the cause of the worker’s death.

A spokesperson for Delta Airlines simply confirmed in a statement to Orlando Weekly that they’re working with local authorities to investigate the worker’s death, adding they were “heartbroken” by the loss of their team member.

“The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of a team member while on the job at Orlando International Airport on the evening of May 7,” Delta shared in a statement. “We are focused on extending our full support to family and taking care of our Orlando team during this difficult time. We are working with local authorities as a full investigation gets underway to determine what occurred.”

A spokesperson for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, a government body that oversees Orlando airport operations, similarly expressed sadness at the unexpected loss. “The MCO community is deeply saddened about the loss of a team member from one of our airline partners, a member of our extended airport family,” GOAA spokesperson Angela Starke shared in a statement with Orlando Weekly. “We send our condolences to his family and friends.”

According to the statement provided, operations at Delta’s Orlando station were temporarily paused Thursday evening, resulting in the cancellation of one flight.

Workplace deaths in Florida are typically conducted by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a federal workplace health and safety agency, while local law enforcement agencies may be involved if there is suspicion of a crime. In Florida, federal OSHA is the only government agency that investigates workplace fatalities for violations of government health and safety standards, since Florida abolished its state labor department more than two decades ago.

This is a developing story. Any additional information about the worker who died or the circumstances of their death will be added to this story as an update or be reported as a follow-up. If you have any information about this fatality, please contact [email protected].
