Maui Police Department officers are looking for two men who allegedly carjacked a 46-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman at gunpoint this morning on Hana Highway.
At about 5:27 a.m. today, MPD officers responded to a reported robbery in the first degree on Hana Highway near the Hookipa Beach.
The couple, from Haiku, were “confronted by an unknown male who was armed with a handgun and demanded their vehicle,” according to a statement from MPD. During the incident, both victims were struck by projectiles “believed to have been discharged from the weapon” before the suspect fled the scene in the victims’ vehicle.
Both victims were treated and released on the scene by medics; no other injuries were reported, police said.
Using vehicle-tracking information, officers located the stolen vehicle in the Haiku area. An MPD drone was deployed and identified the stolen vehicle and found a second vehicle believed to be linked to the robbery.
As officers approached the cars, both vehicles tried to drive away, but they were abandoned on a nearby roadway. The occupants then fled on foot into the surrounding brush and pastureland.

“Patrol officers, the K-9 unit, and members of the MPD Air Unit aboard Hekili conducted an extensive search of the area; however, the suspects were not located,” MPD said.
The first-degree robbery investigation is ongoing.
